Summary

The Network and Systems Administrator manages critical IT infrastructure, including servers, networking, storage, and EHR systems, to support secure and efficient healthcare operations. This role oversees infrastructure lifecycles, administers Active Directory, leads projects, develops policies and training materials, contributes to risk assessments, and participates in on-call support to maintain HIPAA compliance and system reliability. 

Primary Responsibilities & Duties

  • End-User Support: Provide technical assistance for infrastructure and EHR system issues, configure and troubleshoot EHR systems (e.g., Cerner) and permissions, and contribute to ticketing system configuration while prioritizing tickets. 
  • Device and Systems Administration: Install, configure, and maintain servers, networks, storage systems, and EHR systems per established policies. Administer Active Directory, including user/group management, security permissions, and Group Policy Objects (GPOs). Monitor and optimize network performance, resource usage, and event logs. Write and maintain Access Control Lists (ACLs), develop SFTP scripts and HL7 interfaces, and create automation scripts for infrastructure tasks. Secure file systems and backups, ensuring data integrity and recovery processes. Monitor environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity, power) to prevent downtime. 
  • Device Lifecycle and Asset Management: Oversee infrastructure lifecycles, dictate refresh cycles, and lead deployment and upgrade projects. Research and procure infrastructure components, obtaining vendor bids. Investigate systems using network monitoring tools to update asset tracking and remove unauthorized devices. 
  • Security and Compliance: Conduct user, system, and security audits to ensure compliance with HIPAA, NIST, PCI, CMS, and SAFER Guides. Harden network and infrastructure devices and contribute to risk assessments throughout the year. 
  • Policies, Procedures, and Training: Develop and maintain processes, procedures, policies, and maintenance schedules for infrastructure. Create training documents, SOPs, and tips for infrastructure and EHR systems. Collaborate with the Director of IT on policy development and annual reviews. 

Shared Responsibilities & Duties

  • On-Call Support: Participate in weekly on-call rotations with on-call pay and be available for emergencies even when not assigned. 
  • Cross-Training: Maintain familiarity with all IT systems, collaborate on projects, and avoid silos to ensure seamless teamwork. 
  • Policies and Procedures: Contribute to IT policies within your role, adhere to all IT policies, and set an example for the organization. 
  • Security and Compliance: Ensure systems, devices, and users remain secure and compliant, addressing or escalating security issues immediately. Contribute to risk assessments as requested. 
  • Training and Education: Complete ongoing training and education annually. 
  • Equipment Installation: Assist team members with physical equipment installations as needed. 

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Expertise in server, networking, storage, and Active Directory management. 
  • Proficiency in user/group administration, GPOs, and security permissions. 
  • Strong project leadership and infrastructure deployment skills. 
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, NIST, PCI, CMS, and SAFER Guides for risk assessments. 
  • Experience with scripting (e.g., SFTP, automation), HL7 interfaces, and backup solutions. 
  • Skills in monitoring event logs, resources, network optimization, and ACLs. 
  • Ability to harden devices, perform audits, and develop policies/procedures. 
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues. 
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for end-user support and training. 
  • Familiarity with asset management systems and inventory tracking. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in technology or computer science or equivalent experience. 
  • 3+ years of experience in IT infrastructure or systems administration, preferably in healthcare. 
  • Certifications (e.g., CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, Microsoft Certified, CISM) are a plus. 
  • Experience with healthcare IT systems (e.g., Cerner, HL7) preferred.
