General Purpose
This is a full-time position. As a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room, you will deliver high quality, patient centered care as you assist staff during operative and invasive procedures. You will ensure the operating room is adequately prepared for procedures and act as a preceptor for other techs. You will also be responsible for preparing and assembling medical and surgical supplies, instrumentation, and equipment, maintaining the sterile processing areas, and receiving and distributing surgical supplies and equipment as needed.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the mission, vision, and values of Kane County Hospital
- Serves as scrub person for basic surgical procedures and participates in complex surgical procedures as needed
- Follows department procedures for scrub persons by assembling surgical packs, supplies and instruments for surgical cases and preparing operating room for surgery
- Possesses in-depth knowledge of service lines and precepts surgical technologists at all levels regarding service line with respect to specific issues, troubleshooting, and training
- Inspects instruments and power equipment prior to use to assure operational order and troubleshoots, reports, and removes faulty instrument and equipment from service
- Assures adequate number of appropriate supplies and instrumentation are available in accordance with surgeon’s preference and counts all instruments, needles, and sponges with registered nurse according to procedure
- Inventories and monitors instruments, sponges and needles on operative field using department count procedures
- Cleans, wraps, and prepares the instruments for sterilization. Inspect, replace, and sterilize medical instruments
- Assists with monitoring and reporting blood and fluid loss during cases
- Ascertains correctness of count prior to closure of body cavities and surgical wound.
- Anticipates surgeon’s needs and assists surgeon by draping patients, holding/passing instruments, retractors, sutures, and medications, applying surgical dressings, suctioning, and sponging surgical wounds, holding extremities, and moving patients
- Recognizes and reports emergency situations
- Assists in the development of unit goals/objectives, quality improvement and cost containment measures
- Arranges for borrowing/lending of equipment as directed
- Assist in the scheduling of surgical procedures
- Adjusts priorities and participates in resolving problems as appropriate
- Maintains appropriate quantities of surgical supplies and equipment by checking and restocking room with necessary equipment and supplies at the end of each shift and apprises supervisor of special requests for surgical supplies and equipment
- Anticipate surgeon and patient needs during a procedure
- Utilize correct body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients, stretchers, and/or tables to prevent injury to patient and personnel

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtain within 6 months of hire
- 1-2 years’ experience working as a surgical technologist and sterile processing technician
- Ability to interact comfortably with patients, families, and staff during a stressful environment
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist preferred
