Job Summary

The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant assists Medical Technologists in performing laboratory duties. Works under the supervision of the Medical Technologist and the Lab Manager.

Duties of a Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant shall be performed in a manner consistent with KCH philosophy. Performance of duties must sincerely and positively reflect consideration, concern, and inspire confidence whenever interacting with staff, medical staff, patients, and management.

Performance Responsibilities

  1. Draw and collect samples, process samples, and handles send out testing.
  2. Clarify billing issues.
  3. Understanding of CERNER EHR Pathnet Program.
  4. Ordering and stocking phlebotomy supplies.
  5. Minor cleaning if needed.
  6. Calling and faxing results if needed.
  7. Communicates with ancillary personnel, physicians, lab staff, and administration concerning department issues.
  8. The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant reports to the Medical Technologist or Lab Manager.
  9. Follows lab safety procedures.
  10. Follows Lab Quality Improvement Plan.
  11. Performs other duties as requested by the Medical Technologist or Lab Manager.

Specifications and Requirements

  1. Education – High school diploma or GED
  2. Training – Training, experience, and certification as phlebotomist/lab assistant is preferred. Can be trained on the job.
  3. Interrelationships – Ability to work under conditions of frequent interruptions, noise, and pressure. Good mental health to be able to perform under extreme conditions of pressure and stress. Willingness to work with the knowledge that errors may have serious consequences for patients, the lab, and the hospital. Good human relations and communications are essential in order to effectively relate to peers, physicians, patients, and Administration. Work attendance as scheduled is essential.
  4. Working Conditions – Works in the laboratory with potentially dangerous chemicals and biohazard materials. Works with explosive and flammable materials. Works in a high risk area. Must be able to work alone with no supervision sometimes. Often works 10-hour or longer days.
  5. Physical Demands – Stands and walks constantly each day. Stoops, reaches, lifts, and carries heavy objects. Hand dexterity is essential in work. Visual acuity and color discrimination is necessary. Aural acuity is essential.
