General Purpose
Part-time position to start. As an assistant to the Director of Surgical Services in the Specialty Group, you will help oversee the daily operations of the clinic as well as work in a medical assistant capacity in the front and back office. We are seeking a candidate that has managerial and medical assistant experience that can perform administrative tasks, schedule appointments, and provide high quality care to our patients. This candidate will also have an understanding of surgery, sterile technique, and surgical technologist duties as you would also be required to assist in the operating room as needed.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the mission, vision, and values of the organization
- Greet patients, complete registration, and give instructions
- Assist with clinic and surgery scheduling
- Perform basic medical tasks, such as handing out forms and paperwork
- Provide patient education – review of treatment plan, any exercises discussed, follow-up care, and /or pre- and post-op care
- Create and manage patient orders for the visit including outgoing referrals/order AND in-office procedures and/or DME
- Prepare patients for examination and/or treatment for surgery
- Prepare patient’s room to meet the needs of the attending physician
- Room patients, complete patient intake, and summarize the HPI for provider including a review of any applicable test/imaging results
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals when needed
- Explain the purpose of tests and procedures to patients
- Answer telephones and direct calls
- Assist with managing costs
- Oversee clinic inventory by maintain stock and new supplies as needed
- Assist physician with exams
- Complete chart audits periodically for clinical accuracy and billing requirements
- Communicate with patients as needed regarding any test/imaging results and/or prior-authorization requirements/results
- Serves as scrub person for basic surgical procedures and participates in complex surgical procedures as needed
- Follows department procedures for scrub persons by assembling surgical packs, supplies and instruments for surgical cases and preparing operating room for surgery
- Inspects instruments and power equipment prior to use to assure operational order and troubleshoots, reports, and removes faulty instrument and equipment from service
- Assures adequate number of appropriate supplies and instrumentation are available in accordance with surgeon’s preference and counts all instruments, needles, and sponges with registered nurse according to procedure
- Inventories and monitors instruments, sponges and needles on operative field using department count procedures
- Cleans, wraps, and prepares the instruments for sterilization. Inspect, replace, and sterilize medical instruments
- Assists with monitoring and reporting blood and fluid loss during cases
- Ascertains correctness of count prior to closure of body cavities and surgical wound.
- Anticipates surgeon’s needs and assists surgeon by draping patients, holding/passing instruments, retractors, sutures, and medications, applying surgical dressings, suctioning, and sponging surgical wounds, holding extremities, and moving patients
- Recognizes and reports emergency situations
- Adjusts priorities and participates in resolving problems as appropriate
- Anticipate surgeon and patient needs during a procedure
- Utilize correct body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients, stretchers, and/or tables to prevent injury to patient and personnel

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtain within 6 months of hire
- 1-2 years’ experience in a managerial role
- Ability to interact comfortably with patients, families, and staff in a stressful environment
- Certification as a Medical Assistant preferred
- Basic understanding of surgeries, sterile technique, and surgical technologist duties preferred
